A hem in sewing is a garment finishing method, where the edge of a piece of cloth is folded and sewn to prevent unravelling of the fabric and to adjust the length of the piece in garments, such as at the end of the sleeve or the bottom of the garment.

Where should a dress hem fall?

What is a standard hem?
Measure the New Hemline
A 1” hem is standard for dress pants or khakis. If you are hemming jeans, a 1/2” hem is standard. Turn the pants inside out. For a 1” hem, use a tape measure or hem gauge to measure 2” above the pinned fold line. To sew a 1/2” wide hem on jeans, only measure 1” above the fold.
Can you hem a dress from the waist?
You will need to take in the side seams to match the original waist. Use the original as a guide to get the curve the same as the original. I needed to remove lots of beading before I could stitch the chiffon layer of the skirt top to fit original waist curve. Unpick the back-skirt seam to fit zipper.
How wide should a hem be?
If you’re working with a fabric that doesn’t hold a crease well, hand baste the hem in place about ½” from the folded hemline edge. Remove all pins. Good to Know: A hem can be any width you want, but for guidance, pant hems should be around 1¼–1½” and dress or skirt hems around 1½–2″.
