Button-down shirts have extra buttons so you can fasten the collar and keep it in place.

Quality clothing typically has at least one extra button attached to the label or hem. Next check the buttonholes. These should always be reinforced with densely stitched thread. This keeps the buttons from pulling or even ripping the fabric.
Traditionally fastened by a single button closure, all of our Barrel cuffs actually come with two buttons, which allow you to control the snugness of the wrist.
There are two buttons to fasten my sleeves, those that would make the cuff tighter and those that would allow them to be looser. This is an easy one! As Carl Goldberg demonstrated in our “Body” episode, commercial cuffs are almost always too big, not too small.
For men: probably because it was easier to reach a weapon inside. For women: probably because they had servants button their shirts. If you’re wearing a men’s shirt, the buttons are usually on the right. If it’s a women’s shirt, they’re usually on the left.
Solution. If the last button on the shirt is above the belt, you need an extra button at the bottom of the shirt. Increasing the shirt length to the next threshold point will cause the shirt to be made with an additional button at the bottom of the shirt tail.
The basic answer is a button up shirt is any shirt that has buttons running up the front; a button down shirt is the same but has additional buttons on the collar. Simple!
Are French cuffs pretentious?
With our standard two-button cuffs, our shirts easily transition from the office to the weekend. French cuffs are pretentious by nature; designed to get noticed. They make a statement that if not careful, can translate into snobbery. First, they require two small cuff-links that you’ll have to buy and keep up with.
What is French cuff style?
The classic French cuff has a rounded version towards the outside of the sleeve, with a less rigorous and more comfortable style than the traditional version, even more suitable for less formal occasions.
According to this theory, the buttons on the sleeve were used back in the days when garments were always open on the sleeves, making the button and the buttonhole a necessary means of opening and closing. There was a time when all men wore jackets and it was something that they wore whatever they were doing.
Called the gauntlet button, this smaller button is intended to prevent the area from opening and exposing the gentleman’s wrist. Gauntlet buttons are a sign of a quality made shirt, a small detail ignored by most off the rack manufacturers.
A You are starting from a mistaken premise: that the two buttons on the shirt’s sleeve are both supposed to show. This is not the case. A shirt with two buttons placed horizontally on the sleeve’s cuff is called an “adjustable” sleeve length.
What are French sleeves?
As we have already mentioned, French cuffs are characterized by a piece of fabric folded back and then fastened together with cufflinks. There are holes on both sides of the cuffs, passing through all the fabric layers. In other words, most French cuffs usually have a total of four holes on a cuff.
How can you tell if a shirt is a boy or girl?
Could you tell at a glance whether it’s for a woman or a man? The answer is a simple one – it’s all in the buttons. A garment for men has the buttons on the right. Whereas a garment for women has the buttons on the left.
“Wealthy women back then did not dress themselves — their lady’s maid did. Since most people were right-handed, this made it easier for someone standing across from you to button your dress.” Fancy! The tradition has stuck and women’s shirts today, including Moore’s, place buttons on the left side.
But while rich men often dressed themselves, their female family members most likely had servants to help them put on their clothes, both out of luxury and necessity. To make it easier for servants to button up their employer’s dresses right, clothiers might have started sewing buttons on the opposite side.
A half sleeve shirt is also called a camp shirt. It is similar to the classic button-down and often has a full-length front button closure. These shirts are casual, and it is common to wear them untucked.
A button down shirt is usually seen as more casual, while a button up shirt is more formal. These rules can be broken, and more often than not a button up shirt can be worn as part of a smart casual outfit.
Formality of Button Down Collars – Casual Or Formal? The button down collar is casual by nature. If they are paired with a tie, it’s usually worn with a casual suit or blazer/odd trouser combo. It’s rare to see button down collars worn with formal suits, and also a little odd of style.
Is it OK to wear cufflinks without a tie?
Don’t worry about the lack of formal neckwear when wearing cufflinks. French cuffs look great under a jacket, whether you’re wearing a tie or not. In my opinion, wearing cufflinks without a tie is a subtle way to show your style without looking too formal. Don’t wear sport or hobby themed cufflinks.
What is an Oxford shirt?
The name Oxford refers to a type of cloth originally made in Scotland. It’s heavier and has a rougher weave (also sometimes known as a basket weave) than other types of shirts, which means it’s sometimes more durable. Oxford cloth tends to hold its shape well and is often stiffer than other types of fabric too.
