What is gown length?
Dress length is the length from transition between shoulder and neck and down to the hemline of the dress. Dress length is sometimes reffered to as hemline (but then it is most often measured from the floor and up.) See illustration below for different dress lengths.
Can a graduation gown be too small?
As a general rule of thumb, grad gowns should fit somewhat loosely so they hang over your body without restricting movement. Length-wise, your grad gown should fall eight to 10 inches from the ground so they cover everything but your feet and ankles.

What if my graduation gown is too big?
Use straight pins to temporarily adjust the gown for a better fit and use marking chalk or markers to show on the fabric where you will be hemming or adjusting the fit. For example, if the gown is too long, pin up the hem accordingly.
What should I wear under my graduation gown?
Women are best wearing either dress pants or a shorter skirt underneath the gown, while men should choose khakis or dark-colored dress pants. Avoid brightly coloured bottoms if you choose to wear dress pants or a longer skirt, as they can be seen below the hem of the gown and stick to darker colours.
How long should a grad gown be?
Your graduation gown should be at a length that falls approximately midway between the knee and the ankle. It should not go below the ankle, or above the knee.
Should a gown touch the floor?
A trip-proof dress should just hit the ground when you’re not wearing shoes. If it’s dragging, try to hem it up or take it to a tailor to have it adjusted. You can also try bumping up your heel-hight to make sure your dress clears the ground.
How do you measure your chest for a graduation gown?

- Hold the tape measure firmly but not too tight.
- Measure all the way around from the fullest part of your bust/chest.

What is a full fit graduation gown?
Full fit gowns are made according to the traditional university design with a delicately pleated v-shaped yoke, fluting, and a full-length zipper in the front. They are made from a high quality, mat-finish, 100% polyester fabric that is lightweight and wrinkle resistant.
Can your dress be longer than your graduation gown?
Dress or skirt hem length should be the same or shorter than— without being too short— the length of the graduation robe. A hem that is an inch or two longer than the robe looks disproportionate and distracting. If covering your shins is a concern, opt for slacks instead.
Are you supposed to zip your gown at graduation?
Zip your graduation gown all the way up before the ceremony starts! DON’T: Keep your gown unzipped. You may want it unzipped for pictures before and after graduation (we love your outfit too!) for photos or when you are walking around, but during the ceremony this is not the proper look!
Do you close your gown for graduation?
Bachelor’s degree: The gown style for Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees are of the same design. The gown has open, pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The gown will fall no lower than your mid-calf. Bachelor’s gowns are generally black and Associate’s gowns can be black or in a color lighter than black.
Do you wear a tie under graduation gown?
Ties are optional in most cases, but they do add another formal element, meaning they can help elevate your look. Blazers or suit jackets can get very warm under a graduation gown. If you would like to wear a blazer for photos, consider asking someone to hold it for you while you’re wearing your gown.

Why does my graduation gown have weird sleeves?
So in 1960 the American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code moved the opening of the master’s sleeve from the elbow to the wrist and permitted the gown to be worn closed. The long sleeves now hang from the wrist and the crescent-shaped cutouts have lengthened to the entire front of the sleeve.
