Graduation caps and gowns are long, flowing robes worn over a student’s standard formal attire at a graduation ceremony. The gown and cap are made of matching polyester fabric, either shiny or matte.
How do you make material graduation caps?
- 1 Cut a piece. Cut a piece of cardboard into an 8″ square.
- 2 Cut a piece of fabric in your desired color and material into a piece that is 8 12 wide and 17.
- 3 From the fold out.
- 4 Insert your piece of cardboard.
- 5 Use a large needle.
- 6 Cut your sheet.
- 7 Cut your fabric.
- 8 Turn inside out and insert your poster board strip.
Can you use HTV on a graduation cap?

What will stick to a graduation cap?
Glue is a necessary tool to attach most decorations to the graduation cap. Use Elmer’s glue or any drying glue, which costs $1.99 to $4.99 at most craft stores or use a hot glue gun. Using glitter paint and pens can make a graduation cap look flashy and extravagant.

Will Cricut vinyl stick to a graduation cap?
While this vinyl will stick on top of a tradition graduation cap, it also comes up very easily – so if you want something very temporary, it might be the best option. However, it may come up before you want it to. But in my tests, it did at least stick temporarily to the cap.
What kind of vinyl is used for hats?
Note: For hats, I recommend glitter iron-on or flocked heat transfer vinyl. I didn’t go over any seams with this project (just because the size of the owl fit within the seams), but if you did go over seams, glitter or flock heat transfer would hide the seam better than smooth iron-on HTV.
