Haps are a particularly warm and simple shawl, usually associated with the Shetland Islands. The word Hap itself is simply Scottish for shawl or wrap. While fine lace shawls are also associated with the Shetland Islands, it is the humble Hap that I think of most often when I think of Shetland shawls.

How do I know how many stitches to pick up?
Divide the number of stitches to be picked up by the number of spaces between the markers to find out how many stitches you need to pick up between each marker. You will usually find that you cannot have exactly the same number of stitches between each marker and still get the right total number of stitches.
How do you pick up more stitches than there are?
When you pick up stitches along a vertical or curved edge, pick up one stitch every four spaces (the space you insert your needle into in order to pick up the stitch). Skip the next space and pick up the next sequence of four stitches along the next four spaces.
