In a sense, a top quilt is a sleeping bag without all of the extra weight. It has an open back, no hood, and no zippers. This allows a top quilt to shave ounces and sometimes even pounds compared to a sleeping bag of the same temperature range. Top quilts were originally designed for hammock campers.
Should I get a right or left zip sleeping bag?

Do I need a top quilt with an underquilt?
a top quilt, by any other name, is basically a blanket and can be effectively substituted by common items such as those or sleeping bags or even a pile of leaves in an emergency… An underquilt is going to make the most difference in staying warm. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t need a top quilt.
At what temperature do you need an underquilt?
The average sleeper will sleep comfortably with a 20°F underquilt in most conditions. While colder sleepers should select a quilt rated for 10°F or lower.
Can I use an underquilt as a top quilt?
Underquilt can be used as an alternative to the sleeping bag or topquilt when we want to sleep on the sleeping pad (remember that the sleeping pad should have a proper R-value). Take the quilt out of the bag and shake it down, so the down will expand more easily. Make a foot-box.
Why quilts are better than sleeping bags?
There is no way around it, quilts are lighter, more versatile, take up less space and usually cost less than sleeping bags. If you decide to give quilts a try, make sure you pick one that isn’t too narrow, has a warm neck collar and a good attachment system.

In general, Ultralight Backpackers will want to stay under 16 ounces (1 pound) for a sleeping pad. Cheaper closed-cell foam pads fall in this weight class, as do many of the nicer air pads.
