Stone washing is a textile manufacturing process used to give a newly manufactured cloth garment a worn-in (or worn-out) appearance. Stone-washing also helps to increase the softness and flexibility of otherwise stiff and rigid fabrics such as canvas and denim.

Why is it called stone wash?

The jeans are placed inside of a rotating drum with small stones. The stones may be smooth, or they may be porous “pumice” stones. As the drum rotates, the stones will beat against the denim from which the jeans are made. This process will distress the jeans, resulting in stone wash jeans.
