Dust covers will help, no doubt. But, in most cases it’ll be minimal, and likely negligible. Pretty much all shocks have a wiper seal, which as the name implies, wipes the shaft as it slides into the shock body.

The correct way to mount it is as shown with the boot down and the label facing so it is not upside down.
