Are vegans allowed to wear cotton?
Take two other common natural products, silk (which comes from worms) and wool (from sheep, alpacas or other animals) and it is easy to see why people might well ask the question, is cotton vegan? Thankfully, cotton comes from plants (cotton plants, no less!) and, so yes, cotton is definitely vegan.

Does cotton come from an animal? Many fibers are derived from animals so it’s quite easy to assume that cotton would come from an animal, however this is not the case. In fact cotton simply comes from the cotton plant which is has a rather fancy scientific name Gossypium.

Is silk vegan friendly?
There is no such thing as vegan silk.
There’s one question we get a lot: “Is silk vegan?” and unfortunately, the answer is no. Because silk is made out of silkworms, even if it’s with the fibron produced naturally by the insect in cruelty-free silk, it’s still not considered vegan.

What is cotton made of?
Cotton, like most other plant fibers, is made of a carbohydrate called cellulose. Cellulose is a polymer made up of glucose, a type of sugar. Glucose is made in the leaves of the cotton plant, which are filled with bright green chloroplasts.

Cotton fibers are the purest form of cellulose, nature’s most abundant polymer. Nearly 90% of the cotton fibers are cellulose. All plants consist of cellulose, but to varying extents. Bast fibers, such as flax, jute, ramie and kenaf, from the stalks of the plants are about three-quarters cellulose.

Is satin vegan?
It can be! This depends on what fabric is originally used before it is woven to become satin. If the satin in question uses silk, it isn’t vegan, but if it uses plant-fibres and synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon, then it is technically vegan.

Is Nike vegan?
In order to be 100% certain of Nike’s vegan shoe options, we reached out to the Nike customer support team. They informed us that Nike has both vegan and non-vegan shoe options. Obviously, Nike sells some shoes with use leather uppers which are not vegan friendly, but others are harder to identify.
