- Go ahead and do up your collar. If you can’t, or if it takes effort beyond twenty seconds, then chances are your collar is already too tight.
- Use either hand and insert your index and middle fingers pressed together into the top of your collar between the fabric and your skin.

How tight should shirts be?

How do you know if a shirt is too big?

You should be able to tuck easily, comfortably, and not have to worry about the shirttails crowding in the back or the sides.
The back of your collar should land on the back of your neck, without a large gap (a finger should fit in comfortably). A large gap between your neck and your collar is a sign that the shirt is too large for you.
The collar must touch your neck when buttoned closed, and you should be able to place two fingers between the collar and your neck, without feeling any discomfort. If you can barely breathe and you can’t place any fingers between your neck and collar – too tight!
Does neck size affect shirt size?
Dress shirts rely on two measurements, neck size, and sleeve length. The neck size appears first, and increases by half inches range from 13″ to 19″. The second number is the sleeve length. Every shirt has two length options that depend on which of the buttons you are using on the cuff.
How much room should a dress shirt have?

Unbuttoning the Collar Buttons
For the most relaxed look, unbutton the collar point buttons and unbutton the top button. This option for wearing button down collar shirts is best when you need to look your most casual, whether on weekends or after dinner. We do not recommend this look for professional settings.
Wear the shirt under a well-fitting sweater or over a full-sleeved shirt with cuffs rolled up. Such shirts go well with V-neck sweaters. Another complete look is to wear men’s button-down shirts under a blazer and tuck them into the jeans. Use matching accessories like a leather belt and branded shoes.
Fitted jeans are usually the right option. You want the jeans to look tailored to your body, so slim and fitted will pair better with a dress shirt than loose fitting jeans. In general, they also cuff better at the ankle for a more tailored look.
Ideally, that collar should be versatile enough to allow you to wear it popped-up or wear it down, depending on the look you are going for that day. You want a shirt where the neck opening and top button placement are designed for a female body [so they] effortlessly create an open v-neck look.
