BUD/S is a 6-month SEAL training course held at the Naval Special Warfare Training Center in Coronado, CA. You’ll start with five weeks Indoctrination and Pre-Training as part of a Navy SEAL Class, then go through the Three Phases of BUD/S. First Phase is the toughest.

After 24 grueling weeks in BUD/S, SEAL candidates receive their SEAL Qualification Training diploma. After receiving the SQT diploma, SEALS are assigned to their SEAL team to prepare for deployment.
The test is a 1000-meter swim, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and a four-mile run. The minimum standards for this expanded test are as follows: 1000-meter swim – with fins ( 20 minutes or under ) Push-ups: at least 70 ( Two-minute time limit )
Odds of Completing Training
Each year, about 1,000 recruits make it to SEAL training. About 250 complete their training and join approximately 2,000 more active SEALs, who work among nine active duty teams. Some SEAL candidates choose to drop out of the program, and some are forced out.
Is buds the hardest part of SEAL training?
It is the hardest week of the hardest training program in the U.S. military, Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training. It always falls during First Phase of BUD/S — in the modern era, anyway — though it has moved around a bit within First Phase.

The numbers are so unfavorable because of the rigorous training that aspiring SEALs and SWCC candidates go through. The training comes in both mental and physical stages that begin with two months of intense physical training. After that, they must pass a physical screening at the first stage or face being eliminated.
How hard is it to pass buds?
They are tough but not bad, if you prepare properly. The two-mile ocean swims are not bad, either, if you are used to swimming with fins when you arrive. The obstacle course will get you, too, if you are not used to climbing ropes and doing pull-ups. Upper body strength is tested to the max.
How much sleep do you get during buds?
“It’s very, very difficult during ‘Hell Week. ‘ You get 4 hours of sleep. You’re not allowed to have any caffeine. Throughout the entire week, you’re hungry, you’re cold, you’re sandy, you’re wet, just the lack of sleep.
Can you go straight to buds?

73 to 75 percent
The enlisted SEAL attrition rate is 73 to 75 percent, according to the Navy, while the SWCC attrition rate is 63 percent. The SEAL officer program has a higher rate of success: 65 percent of candidates make it through.
What is the average age of a Buds candidate?
The average 18-year-old is experiencing something at BUD/S that most older students experienced years ago. The first year being away from home, friends and family is tough.
Initial BUD/S recruits are required to build up to a 16-mile-per-week running regimen. This is a nine-week program that begins with running 2 miles a day at an 8:30 pace, for three days a week. This continues for the first two weeks, with a week of rest. Week four increases this amount to 3 miles a day.
Results indicate a relatively high use of smokeless tobacco products in this population. SEALs have a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking 7 versus 39 than that of the general Navy population Conway, Trent, and Conway, 1989. However, SEALs have a significantly greater use of smokeless tobacco 33 versus 17.
