How Tight Should Hi-Hat Clutch Be?

A little loose gives a good “wash” too, when you want it. Rub your palms together…the looser you have the hats, the more of THAT action between the cymbals you get. The tighter the hats, the more the edges will stay in line with each other, and the result is more “clang” sound.

Should you compress hi-hats?

We compress hi-hats often by 2dB to 6dB, with a ratio between 3:1 to 6:1. EQ (boost): We rarely boost the frequencies of hi-hats as this often results in a messy sound. If necessary, you can boost the high-end of hi-hats slightly around 10kHz to increase its definition.

The Hi-Hat foot should only be raised a little, about an inch, when opened. It is not necessary and in fact incorrect for the foot to be raised any higher than this. All that is required is for the foot to roll back on the pedal a little for the two cymbals to raise and separate.

You can do whatever you want. I’ve heard of people using 2 16″ crashes as hihats, the only real problem with this is placement. Using one half of a hihat as a crash wouldn’t be too bad, as long as you like the sound.
