Mass-produced garments, to be economically viable to the companies making them, need to fit what we call the “largest common denominator.” In terms of suits, this translates to a boxy fit with large armholes (a small man can fit into large armholes, but a large man can’t fit into small ones).

How do you tell if a suit fits properly?
As a quick recap, here are the signs your suit doesn’t fit:
- The jacket shoulders sag or bite.
- The button pulls or the button stance is higher than 1-3 fingers above your belly button.
- The jacket chest gapes open or breaks.
- The jacket doesn’t cover around 80% of your butt.
- The trouser seat isn’t smooth.
Should a suit be baggy?
With the top button fastened (never the bottom button), the jacket should lightly hug your midsection, but not feel tight or constricting. The jacket shouldn’t be pulling at the button, creating an ugly “X”. The X mean’s it’s too tight.
How do you know if a suit is too big?
Once again, stand up straight and allow your arms to dangle by your sides. Ideally, you should see about half an inch of linen from your shirt exposed, separating your hands and the jacket sleeve. If the jacket sleeves go beyond this length and cover up all of your shirt linen, it’s probably too big.
Should a suit fit snug?
Should suits be tight or loose? Whenever you button the top button (never the bottom), the jacket should hug your stomach softly without feeling constricting. The jacket shouldn’t be pulling on the button, forming an unattractive “X.” The “X” indicates that the fit is too tight.
Should a suit jacket cover your bum?
Jacket length can really change the look and is important when it comes to a proper fit. For a man, the perfect fit, the back should cover your butt, ideally where the butt curves back in towards your thighs.
What do you do if your suit is too big?
The first (and most obvious) is to see a tailor. They can re-measure you and tighten up areas of the suit to better match your body. You can also buy a smaller belt if it’s still loose around the waist afterwards, but be warned, it can start to make your suit look sloppy if you have to tighten it too much.
Should sleeves show under suit?
Ideally, you should try to show about 1/4 inch of your shirt cuffs when standing and 1/2 inch when sitting. If you’re unable to achieve this amount of exposed cuff, you may need to upgrade to a larger dress shirt with longer sleeves. Alternatively, you can switch to a smaller suit jacket with shorter sleeves.

Where should suit arms fall?
Answer: Your suit jacket/blazer sleeve should end right above the top of your wrist bone (or the hinge of your wrist). However, in order to show the proper amount of dress shirt cuff based on the correct suit jacket sleeve length, your shirt sleeve length must obviously fit correctly.
What should you not do while wearing a suit?
Always unbutton your suit before sitting down or you risk ruining it. Always remove the stitching on the vents and the label on the left sleeve before wearing a new suit. Never remove the stitching of the jacket pockets and never use your pockets, they can easily be stretched out, warping the entire suit.
Can you tailor a suit that is too big?

Narrowing ones that are too large around the arms is an easy alteration. Making sleeves slightly longer or shorter, say by a 1/2″ or so, is also a fairly routine procedure.
Is it easier to take in or let out a suit?
Taking in your suit jacket is much easier than letting it out. A tailor will be able to pin the jacket exactly where the fabric will be taken in to give you a visual prior to altering. Two type of vents are offered in men’s suit jackets: the solo center back vent design or the double vents at the side back panel seams.
Is my suit too loose?
Allow for about a quarter-inch of shirtsleeve to protrude below your jacket. The button – your jacket should button snugly without pulling on either side (usually causing an x-shaped crease to form). If you can easily fit a fist between the buttoned jacket and your stomach, it’s too loose.
How tight is too tight for suit pants?
If you can’t pinch about an inch of fabric on each side of your upper leg, the pants are too tight. Any more than that and you’ll want your tailor to taper the pants so they narrow towards the ankle.
What causes shoulder divots in suits?
Shoulder divots are caused when the width of the bicep area is not proportionate to the size of the armhole. Those with larger biceps may have this problem more often, as suit manufacturers typically do not cut with athletic people in mind.
How do you know if a jacket is too tight?
Stand in front of a mirror and look for signs that the fit isn’t right. If the sleeves don’t cover your wrists and the bottom of the coat rides up — like the image on the left — the coat is too small.
How flexible should a suit be?
It should fit snugly against your neck without being overly tight and it should never stand away or gap. If you have a round shoulder the way I do, chances that your jackets gap more easily are much higher than if you have a straight posture.
Who should wear long suits?
Long fit suits are designed for men over 6’2”. These jackets have a body and sleeve length that’s 1-3/16” longer than the Regular fit jacket.
Can you make a suit smaller if you lose weight?
