#3 was slightly mounded and #4 had so much ice I had to use a foil barrier to keep it in place above the fabric. Each was sprinkled with ½ tsp of powdered dye.

What do I need for ice dyeing?
YOU’LL NEED:
- Items to dye (100% all-natural fibers are best: cotton, rayon, linen, silk, wool, etc.)
- Ice.
- Tie dye powder* (this tutorial shows ice dye with Tulip® One-Step Tie-Dye®)
- Plastic spoons.
- Cardboard or poster board cut into 2-3″ wide strips (they should be pliable enough to bend into a ring shape)
How do you set ice to tie-dye?

- Wash your shirt with no fabric softener.
- Set up your cooling rack inside the plastic bin.
- Crumple your damp shirt and place it on the cooling rack.
- Cover the shirt with ice.
- Sprinkle dye powder over the ice.
- Let sit for 24 to 48 hours.
- Rinse shirt until water runs clear.
How long does ice dye need to set?
24 hours
Put the tub in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed, and let it sit for 24 hours. (The ice may melt faster than this, but the dye needs to process for 24 hours for the brightest colors.)
Do you need a rack to ice dye?
Any big pan or bucket that you don’t mind getting dye on will work. I used a plastic tub with a dish rack, but you could use anything that fits inside of your tub and elevates the fabric with enough space for ice to drip through.
What is the difference between tie-dye and ice dye?
You can use the same colors on two different pieces and get really different results! I compare it like this: tie-dye is coloring with magic markers, and ice dye is painting with watercolors.
Can you tie-dye with cold water?
We dissolve the Rit Dye in hot tap water, but let it cool, and add a cup or so of white vinegar. Cold water works ok too, just the colors are not as vivid. The fabric to be dyed should also be pre-washed.
Can I leave tie-dye 48 hours?
Tie-dye needs to sit for at least 8 hours, but ideally up to 24 hours, before rinsing. Keep the dyed items wet and in a warm place. And if you live in a dry climate, you should keep them wrapped in plastic to prevent them from drying out.

When you tie up a shirt to be tie-dyed the die will not go under the rubber bands unless you force it there. To leave more white on a shirt, simply cover more cloth with rubber bands.

Shake the bleach crystals onto the ice. And like ice dyeing, you want to deposit bleach only in a few areas in order to get nice contrast. The more bleach you pour over, the more color will be lifted.
Does vinegar set tie-dye?
Does vinegar help set tie-dye? No, vinegar will not help to set fiber-reactive dye on cotton fabric.
How do you dye with cold water?
- Stir your Rit Dye in a small container filled with hot water until it is completely dissolved.
- Wet the fabric completely with cold water.
- Place the dissolved Rit Dye into a container that is sized suitably for your fabric, such as your washing machine, sink or a large bucket.
- Add your fabric to the container.
Why did my tie-dye wash out?
Just like when the dyes have been mixed up too long. So more of your color will wash out in the end, on rare occasions, all of it, when you use hot water to mix your dye instead of warm, as suggested. Cold water is a problem with some colors.
Do you wash tie-dye After dying?
Let the Dye Marinate — Don’t wash your shirt for at least 24 hours after dying it. The longer you wait, the more time the dye will have to set into the fabric. Wash It On Its Own — When you’re ready to wash, put it in the washing machine by itself or with other similarly colored tie-dyed shirts.
Can I let tie-dye sit for 3 days?
Step 8: After you dye
Leave it tied up and leave it alone. Let the fabric sit for 2-24 hours. The longer you can let the fabric sit, the easier it will be to wash out loose dye from the fabric. The length of time you let the fabric sit is not overly critical.
