How far apart should corset loops be?

First, you need to determine how many loops you need. Typically they are spaced about 1.5 inches apart. There is a bit of wiggle room here depending on the amount of space for the corset back. It’s okay if it’s not exactly 1.5 inches apart.

How do you know if your corset is too big?

If your corset is too big you will find that you can close it up (or nearly) without having to really cinch. Remember when your corset is brand new, it’s very stiff and has no “give” whatsoever. If you are able to nearly close completely, it will be too big within a week or so of seasoning.

The top of the corset should lay snugly against the body. It should be tightened such that it neither gaps (stands away from the body) nor cuts in (creating a muffin effect). Particularly at the side of the rib cage (or top of the bust) you want to make sure that it is laying smooth and flush.

What can I use instead of boning?

Plastic cable ties can easily be cut with household scissors, making it convenient and safe to use. No wire cutters! The ends don’t need to be tipped or capped, either. Just trim them into a rounded shape and file any rough edges with a metal nail file.
