Why has my puffer jacket gone flat?
When you are trying to store your puffer jacket you should avoid keeping it stored in a bag, or any compressed state, for too long. This can lead to it becoming flattened and it may negatively impact the down inside.
How waterproof is RAB?
These layers are incredibly thin, at Rab we use membranes that range between 7 and 30 microns in thickness – for reference, a strand of human hair is around 100 microns. Finer membranes will allow for greater breathability but regular use can lead to a loss of waterproofing.
How should you store down jackets?

Does washing a down jacket ruin it?
Most backpackers are afraid to wash down because they think getting down wet will ruin it, but that’s not actually true. You can (and should) wash your down sleeping bag as well. When down gets wet it clumps together and loses its loft, so it performs poorly at holding in heat.
How do you fix a clumped jacket without a dryer?
- Squeeze excess moisture from your jacket. After washing your jacket, squeeze the excess moisture out of it – however you don’t want to wring it, which can damage the fabric.
- Hang your jacket up to dry. Put your down jacket on a coat hanger and hang it somewhere cool to dry.
- Hand fluff your jacket.
Is Rab sizing generous?
I’ve had many Rab down jackets & for belay purposes, I’d definitely size up to the large. I find Rab does run a bit smaller/slimmer than other brands. Climbing friend! If you are eating the American meal of supersized most fattening then please order the large jacket and do not complain of European “slim” sizing.
Should a down jacket fit tight or loose?

Can I machine wash puffer jacket?
Can you put a puffer jacket in the washing machine? Yes, you can put your puffer jacket into your washing machine. However, make sure you are using a newer front-loading or top-loading washing machine as they most likely won’t have a centre agitator.
How do you Unclump a puffer jacket?
I’ve found this works very well:
- Wash it on gentle cycle with a down specific detergent in a machine that doesn’t have an agitator (you don’t want to rip the baffles)
- Extra rinse & spin cycle to get all of the detergent out.
- Dry on low heat with tennis balls until all of the down is completely unclumped.
Can you fix a ripped puffer jacket?
It’s generally not a good idea to try and sew up a rip or a tear in a down jacket. Due to the very lightweight face fabrics used in the construction of most down jackets, you’ll need a very fine needle and thread to do the job, and even tiny needle holes can cause surprisingly dramatic down leakage.
