How Do You Tell If Jeans Are Sanforized?

When jeans are labeled “unsanforized”, “loomstate”, or “shrink-to-fit” this means that there has been no shrinkage done prior to the wearer receiving the denim, and one can expect anywhere from 3-10% of shrinkage from their pair. Unsanforized denim simply means the denim has not gone through the sanforization process.

Will sanforized jeans shrink?

The sanforization process uses steam and pressure to shrink and stretch the new fabric. Sanforized denim will have minimal shrinkage because of this process, most pairs will lose only about 0.5”-1” in length with a wash.

How do I know if I have selvedge denim?

Turn up the cuff to look at the seams on the inside of the jean. Look at the seam that runs up the outside of the leg. If the edges look finished (the yarns of the self-edge are a different color than the fabric), it’s selvedge. The finished edges of the selvedge will not unravel and are used as finished seams.

Sanforization is a process of pre-shrinking fabric before it is made into a garment. When a fabric has been treated with the sanforization process, it’s referred to as ‘sanforized’ or ‘pre-shrunk. ‘ If denim is not sanforized, it’s referred to as ‘unsanforized’ or ‘shrink-to-fit.

How do you soak sanforized jeans?

To soak your raw denim:

  1. Fill a tub with water (cold water for sanforized, hot for unsanforized)
  2. Turn your jeans inside out and fully submerge your jeans in the water.
  3. Let your denim soak for one to two hours.
  4. Take your denim out of the tub and squeeze the excess water out.
  5. Air-dry your denim.

Should you soak sanforized denim?

If you’d like to remove any last remaining bit of shrinkage, you could go ahead and give them a soak. However, since they are sanforized (and thus most of the shrinkage has been removed), they don’t need to be soaked. They’ll do just fine from first wear onwards.

Are Levi’s 501 sanforized?

The 501 is not sanforized. That is a process invented in the 1920s that limits post-wash shrinkage. After sanforization the pants will only shrink about 1% in wash. But without it, a pair of raw denim will shrink up to 10% after the first wash!
