Buttons on thicker fabrics Start, as above, by fastening the thread firmly and threading on the button on the front of the garment. Hold a matchstick or thick needle over the button eyes and sew three or four stitches over it (illustration A) – this creates a bit of slack.

Dome buttons are hemispherical buttons with a shank on the base and are often used with heavyweight fabrics.
What is the purpose of the fusible tape?
It’s used to make fabrics stiffer, and it’s especially effective for mending hems and small holes. Fusible web is available in rolls, similar to tape, in various widths, by the yard in the interfacing department of most fabric stores and in pre-packaged pieces almost anywhere that sells sewing notions.
Sew through buttons have holes in the button blank (the main part of the button). There can be two or four holes, which are used to sew the buttons onto a garment. Shank buttons have a “hidden” hole protruding from the back of the button.
Needle – Sharps hand needles, size 9 average works well.

In the garment industry, the term ‘self-covered buttons‘ refers to buttons that have been covered in the same fabric as the main body of the garment, whereas in haberdashery terms, it generally alludes to the kits you can purchase in order to make fabric covered buttons at home yourself.
Reinforcing buttons
Make the first stitch through the eyes and pass the needle to the back. Thread on the back button then make the stitches through both buttons at the same time. Ideally, also create a thread shank (see Buttons on thicker fabrics).
The backer button helps keep the glass button upright and in position without drooping or weighing the fabric down.

Tailors have a perfected craft and typically charge $1.00 to $2.50 per button per shirt, often including a standard button. If your shirt has fashion buttons, that cannot be matched easily, your tailor can either rearrange buttons, or replace them all for a higher cost.
What is magic tape sewing?
The tape comes on a roll with one side fixed to a strip of parchment-like paper. With finger-pressing, it sticks to the fabric temporarily and pressing the paper side fuses it in place permanently. Once the paper cools you can peel it off and the tape remains stuck to the fabric.
Is fusing tape permanent?
While using fusible hem tape is a quick alternative to sewing a hem in place, it is permanent and cannot be removed. If you are hemming a garment that may need to be adjusted at some point, for example hemming pants, this may not be the best solution as there is no way to remove the adhesive once it has been fused.
Is there such a thing as fabric tape?
Yes, there is a special kind of tape designed specifically for use on fabric. You can buy fabric tape at most sewing stores, drug stores, grocery stores, and online. This tape contains a strip of fabric coated on one or both sides with a special polymer and resin adhesive that clings to cloth.
A shank is a spacing of either thread or button material that allows spacing for the fabric that will be buttoned together. Hence, the purpose of a button shank is to raise the button above and through the hole so that it sits above the buttonhole. Shank buttons can only be sewn by hand onto garments.

They are used to hold things together or attach them to something else.
