Where the lining meets the fabric of the coat, pull it apart until you see a stitch. With a seam ripper, catch the stitch and pull the ripper to cut the stitch. Pull the lining and the fabric apart and continue around the coat until the hem is completely free. Push back the lining in order to see the hem of the coat.

Can you hem a wool coat?
If your wool coat is so long that it’s restricting the way you walk, it will need to be shortened. Discuss your desired length with one of our esteemed tailors. They will mark the coat’s new length with chalk. After that, they will cut it at the proper allowance to ensure a new hem can be created.
Can you use a sewing machine on wool?
Wools can be very bulky, which can be challenging. Make sure you make use of very good quality threads and the right sewing machine needle to match the weight of your wool. Tip: If you’re finding your thread breaks easily, or you’re having tension issues, you might like to try a silk thread.
Is wool difficult to sew?
There’s no need to fear wool. In fact, it’s one of the most satisfying fiber types to work with. If you choose the right fabric, you’ll be able to have success. When you’re starting out, keep in mind that not all wool fabrics are the same and not all are suitable for beginners to sew.

Press the pieces flat as you can to make it easier to get a proper new piece cut. Lay new lining on the cutting table in a single layer right side up. Pin the old lining pieces also right side up to the new lining fabric. Lining fabric is very easily distorted, so be sure no tension is on any part while cutting.

Can you alter wool?
Most wool, cashmere, and natural fiber knits can be altered in order to give a better fit. This includes “fine knits” (small stitched, machine-made items) and knits of medium and heavier weight yarns. Synthetic and wool-synthetic blends, on the other hand, often don’t lend themselves easily to the re-knitting process.

How much shorter should a dress lining be?

The lining hem may be stitched either by machine or by hand. The finished lining should be about one inch shorter than the skirt, or it may extend only to the upper edge of the skirt hem. If the skirt and lining are to be hemmed as one, mark the hem length on the outer fabric.
Do you need a special needle to sew wool?

These needles are a good match for light to medium, medium, and medium to heavy weight wools. If you’re working with a particularly lightweight wool, try a size 10, 11 or 12. If you’re working with a very thick wool, try a size 4, 5 or 6. Remember: the bigger the number, the finer the needle.
How do you prepare wool for sewing?
To pre-wash your wool, fill a basin with luke-warm water and ever so slightly move the fabric around in it until it’s completely soaked. If agitated too much, the wool will begin to felt. If your fabric needs it, only add a very small amount of soap. Gently squeeze the water from the fabric and lay it flat to dry.
Which is the right side of wool?
Wool works a little differently: the right side is inside the fold. On the other hand, in the case of the fabric coming wrapped in a tube, the way to identify the wrong side or the right side is a little simpler, because in these cases the right side of the fabric is facing the inside of the roll.
