To secure the thread and the shank, push the needle down through the shank to the back of the fabric, and back up and through, a couple of times. If you sew with thread, I like to cut the ends quite long and then knot them around each other.

Appearance. Designed with a hollow protrusion structure in the rear, shank buttons are also referred to as buttons with hidden holes. These buttons are sewn onto the garments through the hollow protrusion using the sewing threads. Flat buttons are also referred to as buttons with visible holes.
If you discover that one or more buttons continue to pop open, you can place a small strip of double-sided tape behind it. When placed behind a problematic button, the double-sided tape will hold it in place. It will stick the button to your dress shirt while preventing it from popping open.
If the missing button was toward the top of your shirt or on your pants, grab a sturdy paperclip, hook it through any thread loops left from the button or the surrounding fabric of the shirt, and then slide it through the button hole!

Many of the 18th century buttons made of natural materials did not have pierced holes, but were stitched onto a garment through a pin shank. A metal shank runs from the center top of the button, through the button, and then is formed into a loop for sewing the button to the garment.
Insert the needle down into the work beside the hole and up out of the intended buttonhole keeping your finger in the hole for the time being. Now see those two stitch ladders above the hole (two horizontal lines) we are going to work the yarn around those a couple of times to open the hole up.
What is a toggle closure?
Toggle Closures are an excellent way to keep garments closed and fashionable. Toggle closures feature two ends, one with a loop and one with a button or t-shaped piece that slips into the loop. They come in a variety of styles, from more natural looking leather and suede ones to chic vinyl.
A toggle button allows the user to change a setting between two states. You can add a basic toggle button to your layout with the ToggleButton object. Android 4.0 (API level 14) introduces another kind of toggle button called a switch that provides a slider control, which you can add with a Switch object.
Sew through buttons have holes in the button blank (the main part of the button). There can be two or four holes, which are used to sew the buttons onto a garment. Shank buttons have a “hidden” hole protruding from the back of the button.
