Old Navy to scale back inclusive sizing in stores, less than a year after launch. On its May 26 earnings call, Gap Inc. announced its decision to scale back the groundbreaking accessibility of inclusive sizes launched by its Old Navy brand in August 2021. It owed the move to a decrease in demand for larger sizes.
Gap discounts nearly everything in the store, threatening margins, and ultimately making shoppers less likely to pay full price. It also offers a lot of the same styles and quality clothing as Old Navy, but for a higher price.
Most Old Navy clothes are imported from overseas. While researching I couldn’t find any information on their specific factories where their clothes are made or policies. However, it’s reported that It’s reported that Gap Inc.
“So we spent a lot of time re-engaging who our current customer is.” The result was “Jenny,” Old Navy’s typical customer: a fictional 25- to 35-year-old mother who earns $50,000 and is pressed for time. Deciding on one personality helped the company focus its clothing styles, marketing campaigns and store designs.

The goal was to be more inclusive to shoppers of all sizes. So instead of segregating clothes into plus-size sections, they wanted to put them all together. And rather than offering sizes zero to 14 like most retailers, Old Navy decided to offer sizes zero to 30.
In 2014, the brand faced criticism for charging higher prices for women’s plus-size jeans than smaller-size jeans, but not doing the same in men’s jeans. A Change.org petition garnered close to 100,000 supporters to end Old Navy’s “discriminatory pricing practices.”
Note that the company switched up its sizing in August 2021, adopting a new size-inclusive system. All Old Navy women’s styles now come in sizes 0 to 30 or XS-4X with no price difference or separate plus-size collections.
To make their customers feel better about themselves, Old Navy increases the waist size of their pants. When Abram Sauer tested some common brands of pants a few years back, he found that the Old Navy slacks measured a full 5 inches bigger than the label!
Not many people know that Gap and Old Navy are two retail stores owned by the same parent company—GAP Inc. Gap Inc. announced Monday that Horacio “Haio” Barbeito would take over as president and CEO of Old Navy, replacing Green. Barbeito joins Gap Inc. after a 26-year stint at Walmart Canada, where he most recently served as president and CEO.

Gap’s target audience is 18-28 year olds. This is currently the age where their consumers are either education, or are struggling to find jobs in this current economic climate.

In reality, GAP Inc. (the parent company for GAP, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta) has committed some of the worst and most public labor violations, including being linked to Rana Plaza, which collapsed, killing 1,129 people in 2013. They’ve also gotten in trouble for child labor.
