Can you dye clothes that are already colored?
Yes, colored and printed fabrics can be dyed. It’s a method called overdyeing.
Can you tie dye colored items?
You can dye all sorts of garments, like cotton shirts, sweatshirts, socks, even shoes! Items made with natural fibers are great for tie-dye.
Does a shirt have to be white to tie dye?
Not just any shirt will do. As you can imagine, white t-shirts are often the way to go. Nothing else will help the individual dye colors stand out better. However, some lightly colored shirts can work well for more unique look, but do keep it mind how the dye will appear against the background.
Can you tie dye a shirt that already has vinyl on it?
Yes, you may tie-dye shirts that have printed graphics. The printed graphics are usually made of vinyl and are not made of cotton. Some prints are even screen printed. Thus, the print won’t absorb the color.
How can I color over another color?
We use a 20 vol developer which can lighten uncoloured hair up to two colour levels, but colour cannot lighten previous, darker colour in the hair. An easy, effective way to lift out darker permanent colour pigments or to lighten your hair’s base colour level is to do a quick bleach wash.
Does Rit dye bleed?
Placing unbound fabric into the bath could result in dye bleeding into the white areas. If you are working with fabric that was ombré dyed or dip dyed, Only place the dyed part of the garment into the bath. If you submerge the entire garment, dye could bleed into other areas.
Can you tie-dye dark colors?
Yes, but you need to remove some color with a bleaching agent first. Black being a combination of all three primary colors, no dye can get it to change color, the combination of black and any color will still result in black.
Do you rinse tie-dye in hot or cold water?

How long should tie-dye soak?
The first step to completing your tie-dye is to let your shirt (or dress, bag, scarf, towel, etc.) soak for AT LEAST one hour. The longer the better, I let mine sit overnight and recommend you do the same. By letting it soak, you are giving the dye time to react with and stain the cotton fibers from the inside out.
How long are you supposed to let tie-dye sit?
Tie-dye needs to sit for at least 8 hours, but ideally up to 24 hours, before rinsing. Keep the dyed items wet and in a warm place. And if you live in a dry climate, you should keep them wrapped in plastic to prevent them from drying out.
Can you dye a red shirt black?
As an example, if you were dyeing red fabric, we would recommend adding some green dye to your dyebath. Since mixing red and green makes black, adding a green dye to your dyebath will counteract the red on the fabric.
