You don’t need a serger in order to sew beautiful things. Finishing seams without a serger can make any garment or home decor project have a finished look and last a lifetime.
How do you finish seams on leggings?
For leggings, that will be under a lot of stress and pull, I recommend using two rows of zigzag stitching. First, join the garment pieces using a narrow zigzag, then reinforce the seam by sewing a medium zigzag over the seam allowance.
Is it hard to sew leggings?
Leggings are a really fun, easy and fast garment to make. There are just two pattern pieces, the leg and the waistband, making it a great project when you’re just starting out sewing knits. Personally, something that is quick to sew and super useful is my favorite kind of make.

Can you make leggings with 2 way stretch?
No real trick here. Be sure that your pattern piece is laid out with the grain. If you have a 4 way stretch fabric, the leg can go lengthwise or crosswise with the grain, if you want to change the direction of a print. If 2-way, you must go with the grain, because your fabric will only stretch horizontally.
Can a regular sewing machine do Serging?
Ideally, you’d have a serger for that, but sergers are expensive, specialized sewing machines, and you might not be able to get one right away. Instead, you could use an overlock foot with your sewing machine to give your pieces a faux-serged finish.
Can you use straight stitch on stretch fabric?
Ensure you opt for the right size of needle for your fabric. Use stitches that will hold the stretch of the fabric – the stitches need to stretch with the fabric, so they don’t pucker and break. If you must sew with a straight stitch, then hold the material taut, but don’t pull it.

Can I sew knits with a regular sewing machine?
You might think you need an overlocker or serger if you’re sewing knit fabrics. But don’t worry if you’ve only got a regular sewing machine – sewing knits is perfectly possible. No need for professional or fancy sewing machines!
Can you make clothes without an overlocker?
You can use alternative seam finishing techniques that will finish garments neatly without an overlocker. You can use French seams or flat fell seams or even a simple zig zag stitch. Overlockers are not used in couture garments, in fact many seams are left raw.
Does nylon Spandex fray when cut?
As I mentioned earlier, spandex doesn’t fray, so if you’re going to be wearing boots or gloves that cover arm or leg holes, you can technically leave it unfinished and be fine. If you want a cleaner finish, a zigzag stitch is a good option.
