What kind of fabric is best for a corset?

The only fabric that can totally meet these criteria is coutil. Coutil is the best fabric for corset making; here you can see the tight herringbone structure which gives the fabric its strength and durability.

Are corsets hard to sew?

It’s not that it’s so tricky – it’s just long, and tedious, and surprisingly physically demanding. First you cut out tons of little pieces – my favourite corset pattern has 10, and you need at least a front and a back of each, though I often use as many as four layers of the same piece.

What can I use instead of boning?

Plastic cable ties can easily be cut with household scissors, making it convenient and safe to use. No wire cutters! The ends don’t need to be tipped or capped, either. Just trim them into a rounded shape and file any rough edges with a metal nail file.

What should I line my corset with?

Lining fabric, ideally coutil (cotton specifically for corsets), but any strong non-stretch woven cotton fabric will do.

How do you finish a corset?

Turn the edging towards the outside of the corset. Then fold the cut end around the leading edge. Fold the ribbon over the raw edge of the corset, onto the back, hiding the cut end of the ribbon. When using bias tape, all edges are raw and need to be hidden within the edging.
