Do you need soda ash for ice dye?

Immediately before you start your ice dye, you’ll need to pretreat your fabric with a solution of 1 cup soda ash to 1 gallon of water. Mix the two together in a clean bucket until the solution is clear, then soak your prewashed fabric in the solution for 15 minutes before starting your ice dye.

What can I use instead of soda ash?

What happens if you tie-dye without soda ash?

We use it to elevate the pH so that the dye can react with the fibers. It’s only in the presence of an alkaline environment that the dyes are able to react at room temperature. Forgetting to use soda ash will leave you with very pale colors.

Shake the bleach crystals onto the ice. And like ice dyeing, you want to deposit bleach only in a few areas in order to get nice contrast. The more bleach you pour over, the more color will be lifted.

Can I make my own soda ash?

Simply heat baking soda or sodium bicarbonate in a 200 F oven for about an hour. Carbon dioxide and water will be given off, leaving dry sodium carbonate. This is the soda ash. The compound will readily absorb water, forming the hydrate (returning to baking soda).

How do you make soda ash solution?

To mix a gallon of soda ash solution:

  1. Pour 1/2 cup soda ash powder into the jug. (See Note, below.)

Using a spoon, sprinkle MX dye powder on the ice. Allow to sit for 24 hours. Rinse in cold water until water runs clear. Wash in the washing machine like normal.

Once you’ve finished sprinkling the dye powders, it’s time to sit back and let the ice melt. Put the tub in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed, and let it sit for 24 hours. (The ice may melt faster than this, but the dye needs to process for 24 hours for the brightest colors.)
