While lengthening a jacket is impossible because there simply isn’t enough fabric to exploit, shortening from the bottom is possible provided you are only reducing the length by a small amount.

Can you tailor a jacket to be longer?
A suit jacket’s length can be altered. However, it cannot be made longer – only shorter. It’s a risky alteration because the spacing of the pockets and button holes cannot be changed and if a jacket is shortened too much, you run the risk of compromising the balance of the garment.
Can you expand a jacket?
A woman’s jacket can be made larger by letting out some of the fabric in the seams. Even a 1/2 inch on both side seams will add an extra inch to the width of the jacket. Some women’s jackets also have double side seams or a seam down the back to allow for a more fitted look.

To make sure that the jacket is secure, wrap your arms around your shoulders like you’re giving yourself a hug. Although this feels a little uncomfortable, leather stretches more while it’s wet. You can also grab the jacket firmly with both hands and pull it to stretch it out.

Can a jacket be let-out (made roomier) in the midsection? Sure, if there is fabric available. If the jacket is just a touch snug in the belly, you can also cheat it by moving out the front button a 3/8″ or so.

Using either baby shampoo or a gentle hair conditioner, mix in roughly 1 Tbsp for every 1 quart of water. Stir in, until the water takes on a slick, soapy consistency. Conditioner and baby shampoo can relax the fibers of your shrunken clothes. When the fibers are relaxed, they become easier to stretch and reshape.
