Luckily, you can easily restyle an old cardigan by sewing buttons and turning it into a cute button-front cardigan. For this restyling idea, I will be using an old open-front knit cardigan, large wooden buttons, and a small plain button (see links below): My first though was to make button holes on the cardigan.

- Velcro. Sewing Velcro is often my first preference when I am looking for alternatives to buttons.
- Kam Snaps. I only started using these recently but I LOVE them!
- Sew on Press Studs (Snaps) These have been around forever!
- Snap tape. This is a tape made from twill with the snaps already attached.
- Hook and Eyes.
How to Faux Tuck a Cardigan Sweater
- Pick out a new cardigan, or one you have in your closet that buttons the entire front. You don’t want to go with one that is overly long.
- Criss cross the bottom two buttons and holes. You will button the last button in the next hole up.
- Flatten out any bubbles, but that’s it!
How do you attach cardigan toggles?
Insert the needle up from the underside of the jacket fabric and pull it through until the knot stops the thread. Stitch the toggle in place by taking four or five small stitches over the base of the toggle. End the stitching with the needle on the underside of the fabric and tie a knot. Clip off the excess thread.
Can cardigans be altered?
You generally can. Most wool, cashmere, and natural fiber knits can be altered in order to give a better fit. This includes “fine knits” (small stitched, machine-made items) and knits of medium and heavier weight yarns.
The same rule which applies to 3-button suit jackets also applies to cardigans: always button the middle button, sometimes the top button (along with the middle), and never the bottom (you want to allow the bottom of the sweater to flare out over your waist).
Just like a suit, a cardigan looks infinitely cooler when you leave a button undone at the bottom. If you’re feeling bold leave a couple undone. Whatever you do, avoid buttoning only the middle button. It’s the quickest way to add unnecessary pounds to your frame.
Are cardigans Manly?
Don’t let anyone tell you that cardigans aren’t manly. The open-fronted sweaters were named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, a prominent British military figure who popularized the style. Cardigans have become a uni-sex garment, which has sadly led many men to move away from the cardigan as a masculine sweater option.
Do cardigans make you look old?
Sweater sets. Wearing a sweater set can significantly age a woman over 20, according to Harper’s Bazaar. They might seem sensible, but in reality, the combo of a cardigan over a matching shell just screams little old lady, even when you don’t mean for it to.
Can you tuck in a cardigan?
A Bulk-Free Tuck
The first is to tie a single knot with the ends of your cardigan right at the top of your pants or skirt. Then, tuck the loose ends underneath the hem of your sweater. (If you really want to secure them in place, you can use safety pins, secured from the inside.)
How do you wear a cardigan that is too big?
The easiest way to wear the cardigan is over straight-leg jeans and a T-shirt – oversized styles are key to prevent your look from being twee. Or tuck it into high-waisted trousers for a slimmer silhouette. Alternatively, invest in a fine knit version and belt it over a midi skirt – a great winter workwear option.
