Dye is different from leather paint (which sits on the surface), firstly, you can only dye darker than the original colour. Secondly the dye penetrates the leather so you can’t change your mind and dye a different or lighter colour afterwards. But unlike leather paint, it won’t ever crack over time.

What kind of shoes can you dye?
For best results, we recommend dyeing canvas shoes or silk bridal type shoes. We do not recommend dyeing leather shoes. The only exception would be Uggs® Sheepskin boots. If the shoes you are dyeing are white or off white, then you should be able to achieve true color.
Can you dye white shoes black?
If your white leather shoes are beginning to look dirty or dingy, or perhaps you just want a new look for them, consider dyeing them black. Dyeing white leather shoes black is an inexpensive way to spruce up the shoes. Special dyes are available for dyeing leather.
Can you dye brown shoes black?
If you want to change the color to black I would suggest using Fiebing’s leather dye instead. It is a penetrating dye that changes the color similar to how wood stain is used to color wood. Your boots would be permanently black and more even in color. Fiebing’s Leather dye comes in many colors.
