A true navel piercing goes through the tissue of your outie rather than the surface skin just above or below it. If aren’t a candidate for a traditional belly button piercing, you can talk to your piercer about this as an option. Just know that they might not be willing to do it.

Can people with Outies get piercings?
It’s not recommended to pierce “outie” tissue. A normal navel piercing goes only through the surface skin at the edge or the navel, while an “outie” navel is more complex than simple surface skin; it is residual scarring from the umbilical cord. As such, an infected “outie” piercing can become dangerous quickly.
Verify you have a lip of normal skin around your navel.
It may be limited to the area above or below the belly button. If you have this raised skin, you may be able to pierce it with minimal risk. You cannot pierce the actual skin of your outie.
Can you change your outie to an innie?
Umbilicoplasty is the plastic surgery procedure that can reshape both the innie and outie belly button, although it also can be reshaped during a tummy tuck. Outie-to-innie surgery often allows people to be more comfortable with their bodies and boosts a patient’s self-confidence and self-esteem.
If you don’t have a solid flap of skin on the top of the belly button, sometimes piercers can go for the lower lip of the belly button instead (though this is a rare option). Unfortunately, if you have an outie belly button, you most likely won’t be able to get it pierced.
Why do people have Outies?
Most people who have an “outie” fall into one of two categories: either they were born with a tiny umbilical hernia, which is most likely, or had a small infection at the base of the umbilical cord that went unnoticed. This will cause unusual tissue called granulation tissue to form.
Are Outies rare?
Protruding “outies” can be found on approximately 10 percent of the population. They’re about as common as left-handedness.
How do you get rid of an outie?
Should an outie be corrected? An outie belly button is a cosmetic issue and doesn’t require surgery. Granulomas need to be treated to avoid infection. Hernias usually disappear on their own and those that don’t can be treated with a simple surgical procedure after the age of 4 or 5.

Why do belly piercings reject?
Flat surfaces are more prone to rejection. The tautness of skin. Piercing into tight skin around the belly button or chest puts more pressure on the piercing to hold the skin together (like a staple). The size and shape of the jewelry.
Your size: Overweight people can get this piercing if they want, but it’s not recommended if your navel becomes covered over by skin and fat when you sit. That can suffocate the piercing and build up more sweat, which makes healing more difficult and is a breeding ground for bacteria.
Are Outies genetic?
Innie or outie: Whether you have an innie or an outie bellybutton has nothing to do with whether your mother had one or your father or your grandfather. In other words, it has nothing to do with genetics. And it has nothing to do with how the doctor cut your umbilical cord.
Do all babies have Outies?
About 20 percent of all newborns have an “outie,” also called an umbilical hernia. This is a bulge caused by the umbilical cord as it enters the baby’s abdomen. After birth, as the umbilical cord heals and falls off, the opening to the abdomen usually closes spontaneously.
How can I make my outie an innie naturally?
The shape of your baby’s belly button, by the way, has nothing to do with how the cord was cut or anything else you or your doctor did. It’s simply a result of how your baby’s umbilical cord met her belly, and there’s nothing you can or should do to change it.
What piercings reject the most?
The most common body piercings that reject are navel piercings and eyebrow piercings. The surface piercings most likely to reject are those that reside more closely to the skin’s surface such as the sternum or nape (back of the neck) and Madison piercings.
Can I take a bath with a belly piercing?
Avoid baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, saunas, lakes, etc. for the first three weeks after being pierced as they contain bacteria which can increase the risk of infection. If you think you have an infection, keep your jewelry in!
Symptoms of piercing rejection
Signs that a piercing is migrating and possibly being rejected include: more of the jewelry becoming visible on the outside of the piercing. the piercing remaining sore, red, irritated, or dry after the first few days. the jewelry becoming visible under the skin.
