Refunds for gifts are issued in store credit. When you return a gift with a receipt, you’ll receive a gift card for the gift’s full amount. But if you return a gift without a receipt, in five to ten days, Old Navy will mail you a “merchandise certificate” equal to the item’s current price.

Can you return a gift without a gift receipt?
If you received a gift you’d like to return but don’t have a copy of the receipt, you’ll need to check the store’s policy for returns. Some merchants may be willing to return an item without a receipt but you may only receive store credit, rather than cash.
*They used to allow up to 45 days to return an item, as of 5/1/2022 they have updated their return policy to only accept returns made before 30 days.

The return or exchange may be denied if the item has been washed or worn, and a packing slip or receipt is required. Those who are returning items bought online can print out a shipping label on the retailer’s website, and items should be packed in the same box that they were sent in.
Where can I return a gift without a receipt?
Most of the stores listed below will return or exchange an item without a receipt and give you 90 days or more to make the transaction.

How can I get a proof of purchase without receipt?
Look at the credit card statement each month when you receive it. It will have your proof of purchases in the list of transactions, with a reference number, date of purchase, store and total amount charged to your account, according to the Federal Reserve website (see the Resource section).
Can a store tell if an item was purchased there?
In most cases a bar code does not provide information concerning where a product was purchased. The most common bar code is the UPC code, found on all packaged goods at grocery stores. It only identifies the product (first five digits) and the company (second five digits).
To Return or Exchange Items in a Store
For Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Athleta items, you can return merchandise purchased online to the appropriate store. For example, if you bought an item on Gap.com, you can return it to a Gap retail store, but not to an Old Navy store.
Receipt. A receipt is also necessary for a return and especially when there is no tag. You will have to be prepared to show at least a receipt or at least a tag in order to get some money back for your purchase. The receipt will let the store know how much the item was originally sold for.
If you lost your receipt and want a refund, Old Navy can usually look up your order via your credit or debit card.

The style number can be found on a small white tag inside the item, and it appears in this format: S/xxxxxx-xx. It looks like the style number is on a different tag. It may be on a small white tag found along the seam on the inside of the dress.
