How much does fleece stretch?
Some online fabric shops do print the amount of stretch in the fabric description, which can be very helpful. One of my favorite fabric shops, L’oiseau in Calgary, Alberta, includes the percentage of stretch in most of their listings, and their sweatshirt fleece ranges from as little as 10% to the needed 30%.
How do you loosen fleece?
Lay the fleece on a table, pick a corner or less-noticeable area with which to start and hold the material in place with one hand while you use the other to vigorously brush the fleece. The brush’s bristles should pull apart some of the clumped fibers and make them appear fluffier.
How can I stretch the top of my fleece?
The best way to stretch clothes is to soak the garment using a fabric softener or hair conditioner and then stretch the loosened fibers into shape. Tools like waistband extenders can also easily stretch clothes.
Does fleece stretch or shrink?
Most fleece fabric shouldn’t shrink in either the washer or the dryer as long as it is made from polyester. You may experience some shrinking with fleece made from cotton, especially if you use heat when washing and drying it.
Can you put fleece in dryer?
After washing, hang fleece blankets up to line-dry, or toss them in the dryer on a low- or no-heat cycle. Don’t dry your fleece blanket on high heat, which can cause the blanket fibers to melt or shrink.
Does plush fleece stretch?
French terry fleece isn’t fluffy like other types of fleece because it is not brushed. It also has a looser weave, so it is more breathable and will “give” more when worn. In general, fleece doesn’t stretch much, but French terry is more stretchy.

It is important to know how to wash fleece properly, in order to keep fleece blankets, jackets, or other items soft and looking like new. The good news is that fleece clothing and other items are durable, so it is generally safe to wash in a washing machine.

High temperatures are one of the best tools for stretching out fabrics, and this includes both wet and dry heat. Using a combination of hot water and a clothing iron helps polyester and spandex materials stretch with ease.
Does hot water stretch clothes?
Here’s how to stretch a shirt in a few quick steps: Fill a sink or bucket with warm (not hot) water and drop in two tablespoons of ordinary hair conditioner or baby shampoo. Leave it to soak for 30 minutes. Drain away the water (without rinsing the shirt) and wring out the fabric.
Does cold water stretch clothes?
Fill a sink with lukewarm water.
Make sure the water is at room temperature or a little warmer than that so it effectively relaxes the fibers in the fabric. Cold water won’t help you stretch out clothing. On the other hand, hot water shrinks and damages clothing, so avoid using it here.
Which side of the fleece goes on the outside?
On standard fleece the right side is nubbly and the wrong side is smooth. When the pattern instructions say, “Place the two pieces right sides together,” it means place them nubbly sides together. Fleece marked “anti-pill” looks this way, too, and tends to be ultra-soft and cuddly. Some fleece is smooth on both sides.

Fleece does not shrink, fade or run so there is no need to prewash the fabric.

Fleece isn’t simply just fleece. There are many types of fleece out there, and some are pill while others are no-pill or anti-pill depending on how they’re made.
How do you wash fleece and keep it fluffy?
The texture of fleece blankets and the fact that fleece is a synthetic fabric means that you can’t wash them the same way as you would other blankets if you want to keep them fluffy. It is best to wash them in cool or cold water. You should also use a mild detergent and the delicate cycle, then dry them using low heat.
How should I wash fleece?
Turn any fleece clothing inside out before washing. Always wash fleece using cold water, your machine’s gentlest cycle and just a small amount of detergent since adding too much soap can coat the fibers of your fleece and change its texture. Never use bleach or fabric softener on fleece.
How do you make fleece look new again?
You can try to restore some of the texture by using a razor to remove the pilling and by using a wire pet brush and a lot of patience to restore the nap. You’ll want to start in one corner of the item and work in small sections brushing gently to loosen the matting and separating the fibers. Good luck!
