But there are so many seams in a corset that it would probably take longer to alter a corset than it takes to make one from scratch.

How do you know if a dress can be let out?

Measure the Dress
Take each number and then multiply it times 2 to determine the waist and hip measurements of the dress. Subtract your waist and hips measurement from the numbers you found. Divide this number by 2. This is the number of inches you’ll need to let out the dress on each of the sides.

How many sizes can a dress be let out?

While it is often possible to size a dress up or down, don’t count on being able to take in or let out a dress by more than one or two sizes. Many dresses do not contain enough seam allowance to let out that much -– and with fabrics like velvet and satin, the original seam lines will show.

Fold the loop over on itself covering the raw edge so loop is facing the body of the dress. Stitch in place 1/4-1/8″ away from newest fold as seen below. Repeat with all the loops until each is sewn in place. Cut a piece of boning the length of the center back seam from top edge of dress to top of zipper.

In the event that the dress is actually too tight, zip it up a little bit, wear it for five minutes, and zip it up a little more. Repeat until you can zip it all the way up. Your body will adjust to the garment, and the dress will start to shape to your body.

The top of the corset should lay snugly against the body. It should be tightened such that it neither gaps (stands away from the body) nor cuts in (creating a muffin effect). Particularly at the side of the rib cage (or top of the bust) you want to make sure that it is laying smooth and flush.
