On February 28, 2019, Gap Inc., announced that Old Navy and Gap Inc. would split into two companies, making Old Navy an independent company from Gap Inc. The move was designed to enable the consolidation of the company’s older brands, like GAP and Banana, with its newer Athleta and Hill City.
Gap Inc. has called off plans to split Old Navy into a separate public company, the company announced in a press release Thursday. The apparel maker also announced that Neil Fiske, president and CEO of the Gap brand, is departing. Its shares shot up more than 9% in after-hours trading on the news.

Is Gap a high end brand?
Is GAP a high-end brand? Unlike large fashion houses, Gap isn’t a high-end brand. Gap sits at the mid-market levels and is found in most malls or shopping centers worldwide. Their prices are affordable, however, they do offer good quality – better than online fast-fashion websites anyway.

But now, even Old Navy is struggling. And that’s weighing on its parent company in a big way. Gap (GPS) said Thursday it is replacing Old Navy CEO Nancy Green and launching a search for a new chief executive.
As Old Navy becomes its own company, the other company, which has not been named yet, will consist of the Gap brand, Athleta, Banana Republic, Intermix and Hill City, Gap Inc. said. The moves announced Thursday are the latest signs of turmoil in the retail industry, as Sears and other chains struggle to stay afloat.
According to Forbes, when Old Navy first came on the scene, its motto was “Fashion, Fun, Family & Value,” and was solely created to be a less expensive version of Gap. Gap was looked at as the “middle” of the market, while their other brand, Banana Republic, was more high-end.
