Return to normal activity
You/or your child will require 1 – 2 days/weeks off work/school to allow a full recovery. You/or your child should avoid swimming pool activities/lessons until the postoperative appointment with your MEG ENT Specialist. Please do not dive under water even with plugged ear canals.

What can I expect after grommet surgery?

Your child’s ear may ooze or bleed a little for a day or two after the operation. This is normal and should recover within a few days. You should clean any discharge from the outer ear, but do not attempt to clean inside the ear. Never use cotton buds in your child’s ear.

What are the side effects of grommets?

Occasionally the body reacts to the presence of a grommet and the area becomes inflamed and may discharge. If this happens the grommet will have to be taken out. Sometimes the eardrum may become hardened and calcified. Other rare adverse events include hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness.

Do ear drops hurt after grommets?

There is not usually any pain in the ears after grommet insertion. Although your child may be a little unsettled at first, they are usually back to normal after a few hours. They can usually return to school the following day.

How long does a grommets operation take?

Grommets are inserted through the ear drum, via the ear canal. The operation takes about 15 minutes, but your child will be away from the ward for up to one hour. This is to allow the anaesthetic to take effect before the operation and then give them time to come round afterwards.

Do you get put to sleep for grommets?

Grommet surgery is usually performed under a general anaesthetic where you will be asleep but it can be done awake with a local anaesthetic too. A small opening is made in the ear drum which allows the grommet to be inserted.

Can you shower with grommets?

Showering in clean water will be fine without precautions. If your child swims in a public pool then a silicone swimming cap and goggles will be needed to prevent water getting in the ears. You do need to avoid getting dirty water into the ear.

Can you get your ears wet with grommets?

Can you go swimming if you have grommets? One of the most common complication of grommets are ear infections so it’s best to keep your ears as dry as possible. In the week following your surgery you should avoid swimming but after this you are safe to get back in the water as long as you take a few minor precautions.

What happens if ears get wet with grommets?

Having a grommet in place does create a slightly higher risk of ear infection when exposed to water compared with people without grommets. Some people will develop an ear infection, or in some cases recurrent ear infections related to the grommets and water.

Do grommets relieve ear pressure?

The grommet allows there to be atmospheric pressure in the middle ear, the hearing mechanism works better and your child no longer has the hearing loss for as long as the grommet is in place.

Grommets should improve your child’s hearing straight away. Some children think everything sounds too loud until they get used to having normal hearing again. This usually takes only a few days.

You may shower or bath after going home, but it is best not to wet your ear. You should put a small piece of cotton wool, covered with Vaseline into your ear before showering or washing your hair. This must be removed immediatelyafterwards. You should stay away from school for 24 hours after the operation.

Can you fly with grommets?

It is OK to fly in an aeroplane with grommets. The pain from the change in pressure in the aeroplane should not happen when the grommets are working. We need to check your child’s hearing after grommets have been put in, to make sure their hearing is better.

Do grommets stop ear infections?

Your doctor may suggest inserting grommets if your child has had glue ear for at least 3 months and has associated problems with their hearing. For children with recurrent ear infections, grommets may help prevent recurring infections.

How do they put grommets in ears?

During the operation, a surgeon will make a small cut in the eardrum and the fluid in the middle ear will be sucked out. The grommet is then inserted. Your child will be in the Operating Room Suites for about 30 to 45 minutes. This includes the anaesthetic, the operation and time spent in the recovery room.

Can grommets affect speech?

Yes many children do improve after grommets are inserted but even with this improvement we also know that most of these children don’t develop “normal” speech and language skills without some assistance.
