Can you wash down with regular detergent?
We’ll take you through the machine washing process step by step. What you need: A down-specific detergent: Do not use regular detergent as it will strip away the natural oils that down feathers have and make them more susceptible to moisture. Nikwax Tech Wash and Grangers Down Care Kit are two popular options.
How do you make a down wash?
Machine-wash your down jacket on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees °C. Carefully remove your down jacket and lay flat to dry on a clothing rack. Put it in the tumble drier on a low heat.
Is down detergent necessary?
These formulas are generally milder than regular detergents and produce fewer suds. There are detergents specifically formulated for down, but the experts I spoke with all agreed that they really aren’t necessary for everyday apparel or bedding.
Can I use Tide to wash down jacket?
Tumble dry on low. (Always check care label for drying instructions before you start, to make sure that your fabrics can be machine dried, and to check at what temperature.) Patagonia recommends using either NikWax Down Wash Direct or Grangers Performance Wash laundry detergent. They don’t recommend using regular detergents because it can be hard for it to get rinsed out and it can strip the natural oils in down.
Why has my puffer jacket gone flat?
When you are trying to store your puffer jacket you should avoid keeping it stored in a bag, or any compressed state, for too long. This can lead to it becoming flattened and it may negatively impact the down inside.
How do you wash a coat without washing it?

How do you fluff down a jacket?
If you hang your down jacket somewhere humid, it may begin to smell. Every thirty minutes, give the jacket a fluff. Take the down jacket off the hanger and shake it, massage it and gently pull the fibres. Repeat this every thirty minutes until the down jacket is dry.
Can Woolite be used on down?
We recommend a cleanser that is specially formulated to clean down, such as Allied Down Wash or Le Blanc Downwash. Please do not use Woolite® as it will strip the natural oils from the down clusters, or detergents with bleach. When the wash cycle is complete, wash the comforter again (gentle cycle) with no soap.
How can I wash my coat at home?
Moisten a cloth with the water mixed with detergent and gently clean the surface of the coat. Then, using another cloth moistened only with water, clean any soap residue. Take a dry cloth and remove all excess moisture. Find a place where the air circulates well and hang the jacket to dry.
Can you use OxiClean on down jacket?

Air drying is a big no-no for down jackets because the loft won’t fluff. No fluff, no air pockets trapping warm air, no warmth. Instead, use the low heat setting on a dryer.

Adding dryer balls into the dryer stops the feathers from clumping together and helps to re ‘fluff’ the down. To prevent clumps of down forming you can remove the jacket every now and then from the dryer (hold the jacket flat and not at one end) and fluff.
