Wool is the most used fiber for felting but you could also use a sweater made from cashmere, alpaca, camel hair or angora with wool (the angora cannot be used by itself, or it just doesn’t turn into felt).

Can wool be felted?
Usually, when working with non-woven wool felt, the felting process has been carried out to the maximum extent possible in order to create a strong and durable fabric. This process cannot be reversed once it’s carried out to the full extent. Felting can also occur when spinners dye fiber prior to spinning it into yarn.
Can you felt knitted wool?

Can you needle felt on wool?
The first thing you need to do is thin out your wool/wool roving. As a general rule, it is better to needle felt several thin layers of wool as opposed to one thick layer. You can always add more layers to thicken your piece but it is hard to remove a layer once everything is thoroughly felted.

What’s the difference between felted wool and wool felt?

Why is my wool not felting?
Not using enough water. Beginners in wet felting frequently underestimate how much water they require while felting. You must be quite generous. If you don’t use enough water, the soap won’t lather and the wool won’t be felted properly.
Can you felt wool in the dryer?
Put it in your dryer. I have a front-load dryer with a good light, which is lovely, but any dryer will do. You can put it in with other clothes, as long as they don’t have sharp bits that would catch the stitches, but I found it did just fine on its own.
How do you felt a piece of wool fabric?
Woven wool fabric needs to be felted so the edges won’t fray. I often do this in the washing machine by washing the wool on the longest wash cycle using hot water with a cold water rinse. You then dry the fabric in a hot dryer and voila……..you’ve shrunk those fibers up nice and tight.

Put the bag of fleece in the wash water first and soak for 30 minutes and then move to a clear container of water that is slightly cooler than the wash water. Avoid agitation throughout the process to prevent felting. You may need to wash the wool twice and rinse up to three times to get it completely clean.
What wool is best for felting?
Merino is the most common fibre found and popular for felting. It comes in almost every colour imaginable and is normally sourced from Australasia or South Africa. It is very soft with a staple length of about 3-4 inches (length of each fibre) and has barely any crimp.

What can I do with old wool clothes?
All types of wool are not only recyclable but also biodegradable, whether from alpaca, sheep or goat, as long as they are not blended with synthetic fibers. This is why the best way to dispose of your wool clothing is to make it into compost.
How can you tell if a wool sweater is felted?

- If the wool has just shrunken down a bit, there’s hope.
- If the fibers are felted (i.e. shrunken, and tightly schmooshed together), you’re out of luck for unshrinking. Though there’s plenty of other projects you can make with the felted material (see below).

- Fill a sink with lukewarm water and a capful of baby or hair conditioner.
- Add the sweater and let it soak for 10 minutes.
- Drain the sink of water.
- Place a bath towel on a flat surface and lay the sweater over it.

Can you machine wash wool felt?
Rinse in cold water and dry in a dryer with a fabric softener strip until slightly damp. Large pieces can be washed in the washing machine in hot water on a gentle cycle and rinsed in cold. There will be more shrinkage this way and the felt will become lumpy. Ironing helps to smooth the lumps.
Can a wool sweater be Unshrunk?
The best way to unshrink wool is to soak it in a solution of water and hair conditioner or water and fabric softener. Other products that help wool fibers regain their shape include vinegar, Epsom salt, Woolite, and baby shampoo.
What does boiled wool feel?
This shrunken wool creates a very tight texture, which is sort of similar to how felt appears. Boiled wool has a poor reputation for being “scratchy” or “itchy.” However, if it’s done correctly with high-quality wool, boiled wool clothing can actually be quite soft.
