In boiled wool, you can still see the fibers woven together, while in felted wool, which is washed and rolled out over and over again, the fibers have meshed together. In terms of texture, felted wool is much more matted, so it’ll feel fluffier.

Felting Test
Rub the yarn between your hands quickly until dry. Now, try to pull the pieces apart. If the yarn has felted together, it is wool. If the yarn has not felted together and pulls apart easily, it is acrylic.
Should I wash felt before sewing it?
Before cutting into your design or appliqué –the felt must first be washed. Prewash in a sink of hot running water -immersing the felt completely. We use soap and gently squeeze the felt into a ball, rinsing and repeating until the water runs clear.
