Snap fasteners are widely used on marine applications like boat covers, dodgers and tarps because they are strong and easy to use. However, these high traffic snaps can lose their tenacity over time. It’s a common problem and one that you can easily and affordably fix yourself.
Can plastic snaps be removed?
Wire or Cable Cutters / Nail Clippers
To remove the snap using wire cutters, carefully cut away at the smashed prong in the center of the socket / stud. When enough of the prong has been cut away, the socket or stud should pop off easily.

How do I know my snap size?
In most of the world, snap fasteners are sized by their diameter in millimeters, in increments of whole millimeters. Fasteners from 6 mm to 19 mm are commonly available, and 30 mm are made. In the United States, snap fasteners are sized in several ways. One is simply the diameter in fractions of an inch.
Can you replace press studs?
We can potentially offer a replacement/repair press-stud service using our own components, depending on the original stud and garment, an assessment of the garment/item will be needed to assess viability. Please note that we cannot re-use studs and a match is unlikely.
It holds the socket (top), which is riveted to the underside of the button cap. Inside the socket is a tight wire spring that expands and contracts around the stud as it is pressed on and pulled off. Eventually, the spring looses its strength, causing the fastener to fail.
How do you remove pearl snaps?
Snap Removal: To remove our standard prong snaps, gently twist a small headed screwdriver back and forth all round the outermost lip of the socket or stud to loosen the prongs from the snap component. Repeat to remove all the snap parts from the project.
What is a gypsy stud?
A gypsy stud is often called a “double stud” because it is used to attach two or more fabrics to a single stud. The gypsy stud is the connector portion with a stud on the top and a rivet on the bottom that can be attached to a socket.
