Can Knitting Shorten?

In principle you can add length, shorten or re-knit the bottom of any knitted garment. I knit these mittens last Autumn, and though I love the look and feel of them I didn’t wear them much over the Winter simply because they kept sliding annoyingly off my hands. My mittens needed new cuffs.

Altering the length: Cutting a sweater’s hem can shorten it to a more desirable length, whether it’s hand-knit or store-bought. Altering the neck: If you cut the neckline of a sweater, you can instantly change the style. For example, you can give a plain crew-neck sweater a V neck or boatneck.

How do you shorten a long cardigan?

All you need is a shoelace or another sturdy string (a thin belt would also work, in a pinch). Tie the string around your waist and knot it in place, over your knit. Then gently pull your sweater up and through the top of the string until it flops over to just the right length you’re looking for.

A coverstitch machine is specifically designed to hem knits. It creates a professional looking hem that has two straight lines of stitching, but it also stretches with the fabric. Stabilizing the fabric with hem tape can still be very helpful even when sewing with a coverstitch machine.

  1. Find the new hemline. Turn your shirt inside out and put it on.
  2. Trim the shirt. Remove your shirt from your body, but keep it inside out.
  3. Fold up your hem.
  4. Serge the bottom edge if needed.
  5. Press with an iron.
  6. Secure with pins.
  7. Set up your sewing machine.
  8. Sew your new hemline.

Can a knitted sweater be altered?
