Exactly how much depends on what allowances of extra material were under the seams or hems of the garments.

Typically, suit jackets have enough seam allowance to allow for 1 – 1.5” of added or reduced length. Exactly how much your sleeves can be adjusted is based on where the buttons on the cuff are placed and if you are willing to pay the added cost in relocating buttons and buttonholes.

Can you stretch a suit?

While it is definitely possible to make a suit jacket bigger, the increase in size is only going to be marginal. There is no way (at least no affordable way) to go one size up without ruining the fit of the jacket. The suit can however be let out by an inch or two, depending upon the seam allowance of the fabric.

How much can suit pants be let out?

The waist of a pair of trousers can be let in or taken out 2-3″. Look inside the seat for extra fabric at the waistband – this, minus half an inch or so, is as far as you can take the pants out. Trousers are easily shortened, but lengthening them requires fabric at the hems.

Don’t worry! Making a waist smaller is easier than expanding it. You can go to a tailor to get this done professionally. You can also use a seam ripper to separate the waistband from the pants, pick out the center back seam, and then sew it again, taking in a bit more fabric to give the waist a smaller circumference.

Do suits stretch over time?

The answer to the question of whether a suit that is too small will stretch out over time to fit better is no. If you are wondering whether wetsuits have a shelf life, the answer is yes. Due to wear, regions that are stretched severely, such as the armpits, thin out over time.

How can I alter my jacket to make it bigger?

A woman’s jacket can be made larger by letting out some of the fabric in the seams. Even a 1/2 inch on both side seams will add an extra inch to the width of the jacket. Some women’s jackets also have double side seams or a seam down the back to allow for a more fitted look.

The process of taking in or letting out your suit jacket involves the tailor pinning the side seams based on your desired fit, and taking from either the chest, the stomach/waist, the vents or all three zones.

How long do suit alterations take?

Simple alterations shouldn’t take more than 48 hours unless your tailor is particularly busy and some even offer a same-day turnaround. So if you need some quick fixes to look presentable at, for example, a funeral, you should be good inside a week. More complex alterations can take up to two weeks.

How tight should a suit jacket be?

Generally, the bottom edge of a jacket should end between the two knuckles on your thumb. This rule can be pushed a little bit when wearing a casual sport coat because they tend to be a little shorter.

Tipping seamstresses is not standard protocol. That said, anytime a talented seamstress goes above and beyond, offering a gratuity is a thoughtful gesture.

Are suits supposed to fit tight?

You want to be able to pinch around 1 inch of fabric on either side of your thigh. If it’s less than that, your pants are too tight. If it’s more, have your tailor slim the legs with a slight taper so that it gets narrower towards the ankle. This will look great on every body type/size.
