Are Aran sweaters scratchy?
We are delighted to confidently state that our 100% Merino Wool Aran Sweaters are NOT itchy! Typically Aran Sweaters are assumed to be itchy by most due to their rugged appearance and the fact that they are made from wool.
Can you machine wash an Aran sweater?
Presoak your sweater in slightly warm water (86F / 30C) with some mild detergent for at least 30 minutes up or overnight. Never machine wash your sweater as hot or cold water may cause the wool to shrink! Gently rinse the sweater out, don’t pull at it or wring it out as this can affect its shape.
How do you make a sweater soft again?
- Wash the sweater in the washing machine.
- Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
- Place the sweater in a bucket and fill the bucket with enough water to cover the sweater.
- Return the sweater to the washing machine the following morning.

How do you make a wool sweater not stiff?
Fill a sink with lukewarm water and a capful of baby or hair conditioner. If you’re unshrinking a wool sweater, you may need more conditioner—about 1/3 of a cup. You can also use a gentle wool wash like Eucalan or Woolite for delicates.

You can buy products that put lanolin, the natural oil found in sheep’s wool, back into wool by soaking it in diluted bath with lanolin. This sounds like a good fit for wool, and I suspect that this works the same way that hair conditioner does. You are softening the fibers by adding oil.

Why is my sweater so stiff?
Stiffness can be caused from soap or fabric softener residue. To determine if soap or detergent residue is the problem, wash the garment without fabric softener and allow to air dry. If the fabric continues to naturally dry stiff, the problem is soap or detergent residue.
Can I use fabric softener on wool?
Even non-bio detergents can damage this delicate item so please take extra care in your choice of detergent. Also please note that using too much of the right detergent can cause damage. We recommend that you do not use fabric conditioners or softeners on these products.
