What Is Corset Tape?

Waist tape is twill tape, tailor’s tape, or other sturdy ribbon used to re-enforce the waistline of a corset. It’s not essential, but it does increase the durability of a corset by easing stress on the seams along the the highest stress point – the waist line.

The waist tape’s purpose is to prevent stretching and ripping of the corset at its point of highest tension (the waistline) and corsets that don’t have a waist tape are unsuitable for waist training.

Casing tape is a flat “tube” made from cotton coutil fabric. Sew the casing tape into your corset or hoopskirt to create a channel for your spring steel bones, spiral boning and hoopsteel.

What can I use as a corset?

The best material to use for a corset is corset coutil, because it is specifically designed for corsets, 100% cotton so it’s breathable, very strong for its weight, and has little give in any direction. If you don’t have coutil you can use a sturdy cotton duck (canvas) or quality linen.

How wide should a waist tape be?

For historical reproductions a basic 1″ wide cotton twill tape is perfect. I don’t recommend less than a 3/4″ width, and there’s no need to go wider than 1.25″. And cotton really is preferred. I know polyester tapes (such as Wrights) are found everywhere.

What is the benefit of a waist trainer?

The main supposed benefit of a waist trainer is that wearing it is a fast and easy way to get an hourglass figure. While the waist trainer may give that impression when a person wears it, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) blog, the garment will not drastically change a person’s body shape.

A waist stay relieves tension on a garment at its tightest point and helps to support the weight of the fabric. It also keeps seams and zippers from being strained during wear. Do I need bias tape?

Bias tape is perfect for a decorative finish on a curved edge because the bias will bend and ease around the curve. A straight-grain strip will not curve without kinks and warping. Bias is used in many quilting techniques and sewing projects.

A general corset sizing guideline is as follows: If your natural waist (where you bend side to side) is under 38” select a corset 4-7 inches smaller than your natural waist. If your natural waist is over 38” select a corset 7-10 inches smaller than your natural waist.
