Who owns Cardigan Island?

The island itself is a private nature reserve owned by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. The Farm Park is situated on part of our farm, Clyn-Yr-Ynys. Our family has farmed within the Cardigan area since the 1600’s, and at Clyn-Yr-Ynys itself since 1884, a period spanning 5 generations and counting.

Are there puffins on Cardigan Island?

Over the next few years these ruthless predators feasted on the eggs and chicks of burrow nesting seabirds and wiped out the island’s population of puffin and Manx shearwater. They have never returned.

Cardigan Island (Welsh: Ynys Aberteifi) is an uninhabited island north of Cardigan, Ceredigion, south-west Wales. It reaches a height of 52 metres (171 ft) a.s.l., and 38 acres (15 ha) in area. Lying in the estuary of the River Teifi, it is known for having a small colony of grey seals.

What time is best to see dolphins in Cardigan Bay?

The area between Cardigan Island in the south and Aberporth in the north is a great viewing spot to see bottlenose dolphins between June and September. Though, you can see them year-round. The summer months are best with New Quay being the hottest spot (June-October).

Mid-morning, between 10 a.m. to noon, and 2 p.m. to sunset are the best times of the day to spot dolphins.

There are about 25,000 – 30,000 breeding puffins on Skomer. Luckily the puffin colony here is thriving, which is fantastic news because many puffin numbers and colonies elsewhere, such as in Iceland, are declining.
