On its May 26 earnings call, Gap Inc. announced its decision to scale back the groundbreaking accessibility of inclusive sizes launched by its Old Navy brand in August 2021. As part of the holiday tee’s release, the brand has partnered with Open To All, a campaign that encourages businesses to be, well, open to all regardless of gender, race, or sexuality.
On February 28, 2019, Gap Inc., announced that Old Navy and Gap Inc. would split into two companies, making Old Navy an independent company from Gap Inc. The move was designed to enable the consolidation of the company’s older brands, like GAP and Banana, with its newer Athleta and Hill City.
The goal was to be more inclusive to shoppers of all sizes. So instead of segregating clothes into plus-size sections, they wanted to put them all together. And rather than offering sizes zero to 14 like most retailers, Old Navy decided to offer sizes zero to 30.
Our commitment to all styles at the same price is still very much a thing — price parity isn’t going away. But based on customer demand and supply chain challenges, we made the decision to remove select extended sizes from a small number of stores.
Note that the company switched up its sizing in August 2021, adopting a new size-inclusive system. All Old Navy women’s styles now come in sizes 0 to 30 or XS-4X with no price difference or separate plus-size collections.
