Old Navy accepts returns of items without tags — as long as you haven’t worn the item for a full day.
When you return an item without tags, chances are you will have to pay for the return shipping costs. Most retailers are not going to like the fact that the item is coming back without tags. Some will deny the return completely; others will tell you that the return shipping costs are going to be at your own expense.
Returns and exchanges are free when you use a prepaid return shipping label (online purchases only), or when you return in store. You have up to 30 days from ship date to return items purchased at Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic. Items purchased at Athleta can be returned within 60 days of ship date.
*They used to allow up to 45 days to return an item, as of 5/1/2022 they have updated their return policy to only accept returns made before 30 days.
Can I return something if I ripped the tag off?
If the tag is torn then fine (which it is in the case, having read other post), return as is. But if it’s not damaged just tie back on.
If you do end up removing the tags and/or losing the receipt, the clothes will have to be in perfect condition (no wear and tear, wrinkles, or stretched-out areas) for anyone to consider the return.
WAYS TO ADD A SECURE RETURN TAG TO CLOTHING
- Around A Strap. Using a short length of return tag, approximately 4″, loop the 360 ID Tag around a non-removable strap.
- Through a Sleeve. The return tag easily loops through sleeves for clothing like sweaters, coats, and jackets.
- Through Jeans or Trousers.
No receipt is required if the item is still in new condition. If you lost your receipt and want a refund, Old Navy can usually look up your order via your credit or debit card.
To Return or Exchange Items in a Store
For Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Athleta items, you can return merchandise purchased online to the appropriate store. For example, if you bought an item on Gap.com, you can return it to a Gap retail store, but not to an Old Navy store.

Old Navy Return Policy
The return or exchange may be denied if the item has been washed or worn, and a packing slip or receipt is required. Those who are returning items bought online can print out a shipping label on the retailer’s website, and items should be packed in the same box that they were sent in.
In-store: An Old Navy store associate will process the “Lookup” feature at the point of sale. The transaction will be made with a virtual card number. Via SMS: You can also simply text “Lookup” to 60956 and the issuer will send you a link via SMS.
Can stores look up receipts?
Some companies offer the option to have receipts sent via email. The best way to obtain a receipt if you lost the original copy is to return to the place of purchase. Some stores can look up a previous purchase and print a new receipt for you if you used a credit card, debit card or personal check.
