But, if the pattern you’re using wasn’t originally designed for your body shape, chances are pretty good that the darts aren’t placed in the most flattering position for you.

Skirt back hipline darts should end an inch or two above the fullest parts of the seat. Hipline darts are 4″ to 5″ long in the back of the skirt. Skirt front hipline darts should end anywhere from 3″ to 4″ below the waistline. The front hipline darts are always 1″ shorter than the back darts.

Insert tissue under the dart opening and draw a new dart going from each of the dart legs until a point in the armcye seam very close to the side seam. Draw to, but not through the seam line. Close that dart by either folding it or simply cutting it away.

French darts are more elongated than standard bust darts. They start lower on the bodice (at the side seam, down near the waistline) and end up near the bust point — effectively combining a bust dart and waist dart into one.
