How Does Ice Dyeing Work?

Ice dye is the art of placing ice cubes on top of fabric, then sprinkling dye powder on top of the ice, letting the melting process dictate how the dye splits and bleeds, and where it ultimately lands on the fabric–leading to surprising and delightful results every time!

How long does ice dyeing take?

Put the tub in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed, and let it sit for 24 hours. (The ice may melt faster than this, but the dye needs to process for 24 hours for the brightest colors.)

What dye do you use for ice dye?

What dye to use for Ice Dyeing? Powder fabric dye works best for this tie dyeing method. You can use liquid dye, but you will not get the multiply colors watercolor look as you get with the powder dye. Rit Dye makes fabric powder dye.

Do you need soda ash for ice dye?

Immediately before you start your ice dye, you’ll need to pretreat your fabric with a solution of 1 cup soda ash to 1 gallon of water. Mix the two together in a clean bucket until the solution is clear, then soak your prewashed fabric in the solution for 15 minutes before starting your ice dye.

What is the difference between tie-dye and ice dye?

You can use the same colors on two different pieces and get really different results! I compare it like this: tie-dye is coloring with magic markers, and ice dye is painting with watercolors.

Do you use rubber bands for ice tie-dye?

Tie the shirt with zip ties or rubber bands. Place the shirt in the dish, but elevate it on some empty containers or a wire rack. Cover the shirt with ice cubes. Sprinkle the powdered dye over the ice.

Can you use Rit dye for ice dyeing?

What kind of dye to use for ice dyeing. We used Rit Dye all purpose powder dye. But you can use fabric powder dye like this as well.

What fabric can you ice dye?

A few tips & tricks for ice dyeing:
I recommend using this dye technique on fabrics that are 100% natural, so either cotton or linen. If you use something with synthetic in it, that part of the fabric may not absorb the dye. It’s a cool effect, but different than what is shown here.

What do I need for ice dyeing?

YOU’LL NEED:

  1. Items to dye (100% all-natural fibers are best: cotton, rayon, linen, silk, wool, etc.)
  2. Ice.
  3. Tie dye powder* (this tutorial shows ice dye with Tulip® One-Step Tie-Dye®)
  4. Plastic spoons.
  5. Cardboard or poster board cut into 2-3″ wide strips (they should be pliable enough to bend into a ring shape)

Can you ice dye with bleach?

Shake the bleach crystals onto the ice. And like ice dyeing, you want to deposit bleach only in a few areas in order to get nice contrast. The more bleach you pour over, the more color will be lifted.

Can I do ice dye with liquid dye?

Can you ice dye with liquid? Yes you can!

What is a good substitute for rubber bands?

You can use just about any kind of string, kite string being the most common alternative to rubber bands. It’s made out of twisted nylon twine and you can find it at just about any craft store. You can get a roll of kite string that you then cut in to pieces.

Can you use Rit dye in cold water?

Rit loves hot water because it loosens the fibers in the fabric to accept the dye. We recommend using the hottest water safe for your fabric.

Can you ice dye with tulip powder?

Then I followed directions on the Tulip® package rinsing in warm water until water turns clear and then washing in the washing machine in hot water. This was my result. As always with ice dyeing the finished fabric is always a nice surprise. The Tulip® dyes worked well although lighter than my other ice dyed fabric.

Can I ice dye silk?

Many customers have asked if you can do Ice Dyeing with silk just like with cellulose fibers such as cotton or rayon. The short answer is yes!

Can I ice dye polyester?

So put away your polyesters and acrylic fabrics for ice dyeing. 100% cotton and 100% linen will be your best choices for ice dyeing, though experiment with other natural fibers. Ramie, rayon, hemp, wool, and silk can all be dyed this way as well.

Do you rinse tie-dye in hot or cold water?

With the rubber bands still on, rinse your tie-dye shirt in cold water. It’s a good idea to rinse your tie-dye shirt alone. Do not rinse your shirt with other clothing because the loose and excess dye will stain the other clothes.

Can I leave tie-dye 48 hours?

Tie-dye needs to sit for at least 8 hours, but ideally up to 24 hours, before rinsing. Keep the dyed items wet and in a warm place. And if you live in a dry climate, you should keep them wrapped in plastic to prevent them from drying out.

Can you ice dye paper?

I crumpled the papers, dripped ink directly on it, crushed more ice and wrapped the paper around the ice. Then I let it all melt. The watercolor paper was too stiff to bend or crumple, so I dripped ink on the paper and placed an ice cube on each drip spot. Results of the brown ink.
